The Biggest Sleep Thief Exposed

It’s 08:10 and I’ve just got out of bed.

It must be the school holidays.

Thanks to No Processed Food November, chocolate is no longer my Kryptonite. 30 days of focusing on real food has broken me free from it’s power.

But school holidays?

I wish I knew why they brought so much disruption to my routines and schedules.

I’m usually up and at them by 7am at the latest – even on weekends.

Writing books, being self-employed, trying my best to be a good husband and father… Well it means there’s a lot to do everyday and having a routine helps me to stay on top of the avalanche.

Now Clarabella and Ollie both go to school – One to work, one to learn – and I’m not sure which is which. But the school holidays mean they’re both at home, on holiday and ready to kick back and party down.

And I like to join in.

Oh well, I’ll just have to make sure I do better tomorrow.

I recently read an article titled “Many U.S. workers are sacrificing sleep for work.” that claimed self employed dudes obtained significantly more sleep than private sector employees.

Really?

I must be doing something wrong, because I work longer hours and get up earlier than I ever did when I worked for The Man.

​In the article I read this was part of the summary:

“The evidence that time spent working was the most prominent
sleep thief was overwhelming.”

And the fact is you need sleep, you can’t let work steal it from you. Here’s a quote by American Academy of Sleep Medicine President Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, who was part of the study:

“Getting at least seven hours of nightly sleep is essential to be at your mental, emotional and physical best for whatever you pour yourself into, either at work or at home.”

S’true.

I couldn’t agree more.

Like a lot of good folk, I used to believe that because I practiced Qigong I no longer needed sleep like regular peeps. That I could go to bed later and get up earlier feeling fresh as a daisy because my Qigong practice enabled me to defy the laws of nature.

Gotta laugh about it now.

Sleep loss is serious Grasshopper.
