Is this the reason why you’re not getting enough sleep?

Came across an interesting bit of research yesterday:

Bedtime procrastination: A self-regulation perspective on sleep insufficiency in the general population.

Hey, as I’m fond of saying…

Procrastination at bedtime is thought to be a relatively new reason why people don’t get enough sleep.

In the study over 2000 people kept a sleep diary.

Over 7 days they tracked:

Results:

Young people and women seemed to get less sleep on average. But this demographic only accounted for 8% of the variation in the amount of sleep.

A much more significant factor was sleep procrastination.

That is instead of going to bed, people chose to:

And so on.

Even though they were tired.

In a previous study done by researchers at Utrecht University, their survey showed that while people usually procrastinate to avoid unenjoyable activities, going to bed doesn’t fall into this category.

So what?

Well, this distinction means sleep procrastination is separate from other forms of procrastination. It means the blame lies squarely with the individuals levels of self control.

And guess what?

Your self control is at it’s lowest level by the end of the day.

**Ouch!**
