Why I Struggle With This Time of Year

By Marcus Santer

I‘m going to let you in on a little secret…

I really struggle with this time of year.

There, said it.

I even had to look at my diary to see what day it was.

Personally I find the period between Christmas and New Year a real drag.

I feel like I’ve been moving clock-wise for 50 weeks of the year and then all of a sudden I’m expected to move anti-clockwise.

It’s a wrench.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m always relieved when the world goes back to normal – which in the UK will be Monday.

Ollie and Clarabella are feeling it too.

But in a different way.

Ollie’s moaning about having to go back to school and Clarabella’s not exactly overjoyed at the thought of going back to work. And me being me, I try to help by encouraging them both to keep their thinking in this day.

To paraphrase Lao Tzu:

If you’re depressed your stuck in the past
If you’re anxious you’re stuck in the future.
The solution is to be in the present.

Because you can deal with the present.

You always have done, and the fact you’re still alive proves it.

So if you’re feeling like Ollie and Clarabella, then keep your thinking in this day, by dragging it back to the here and now.

And if you need help with that, see page 52 of the ZEN+ book. Chapter 10: Be Here Now and you’ll find a simple tool to help you.

Yesterday Clarabella got a little bit fed up with me when I reminded her for the 100th time to keep her thinking in the now. And she told me I didn’t know what I was on about, because I seem to be one of the few people who doesn’t dislike the work they do.

Jeez, where do I begin with that one?

So I reminded her of all the suck-ass jobs I’ve had in my life.

The Highlights including, but not limited to:

And they’re just the ones I haven’t been able to wipe from my memory.

I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of suck-ass jobs too.

But you know what?

I might not have liked the work I was doing, there might have been times I got home and just curled up in a ball on the floor because I felt so lousy. But I’ve always worked, I ain’t scared of it.

And I’m proud of that.

Though I wish I’d known back then what I know now.

I could’ve saved myself years of heartache and pain.

And I can sum it all up with a simple little story I heard Les Brown tell not so long ago.

But I’m outta space for today.

So I’ll tell you the story tomorrow.

For today, just keep your thoughts in this day.

Use the simple tool on page 52 of the ZEN+ book – that is if you have the complimentary PDF I’ve been giving away with pre-orders whilst I wait for the physical books to arrive.

P.S. The best job I ever had was whilst I was at York College doing my BTEC in Business and Finance.

It was a 2 week placement with an outfit called the: Buy From The Blind Guild.

My job was to stock up a small truck in the morning with goods to sell. Then travel to small village halls all over the Yorkshire Countryside. Set up the stock, go to the local pub for a few hours whilst the two other members of staff did the selling.

And then come back, help load the truck up and drive back to York.

It was awesome.

Mainly because the driver was the funniest man I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet.

And the lady who did the selling was so beautiful and lovely she made my eyes melt.

Fond memories.

There’s still time to pre-order you copy of the ZEN+ book.
