What is insulin sensitivity and why is it so important?

It took me a while to get my head around what insulin sensitivity is…

And why it’s so important for living and ageing well.

So over the last few months, I’ve been collecting bits of information on the subject.

Making it as simple to digest as possible and no simpler.

And today I’d like to share my notes with you.

Here goes…

Whenever you eat, some of your food gets converted to Blood Glucose – a sugar which circulates in your bloodstream.

This is a good thing.

For example most of your brain requires glucose in order to work properly.

And it uses a lot of it.

Here’s why:

Mr Average’s brain weighs in at about 1.4 kg and makes up less than 2% of Mr Average’s total body weight and yet it uses nearly 20% of his total daily body energy.

You brain needs a good supply of glucose.

Because glucose is so important to the brain it can be stored in your liver. And your liver does a great job of helping to meet the demands of your energy hungry brains demands for fuel.

Your muscles also have the ability to store glucose as Glycogen.

So far… All well and good.

Now the many systems of your body all seem to operate on what I like to call:

The Goldilocks Principle.

What’s that you ask?

Like the girl in the story your body is always trying to keep things: ‘Just Right’

  1. Not to hot or too cold
  2. Not to much or too little

And so on.

So when you body detects too much glucose in your blood the beta cells in your pancreas secrete the hormone insulin.

Insulin encourages your cells to absorb glucose and your body to convert it into glycogen for storage in your liver and muscles.

And because your body is really cool it can also get rid of excess glucose in your wee.

Now then…

The way many people eat today and the things they eat causes a serious problem.

A problem that ends up creating too much glucose in the blood and if this situation persists your body can no longer hear insulins message.

Now your body is no longer sensitive to insulin and can become insulin resistant.

And as a result your pancreas creates even more of it.

It has no choice.

How come?

Because high blood sugar levels are toxic and dangerous to your health.

If this situation isn’t resolved, eventually your body breaks down and the result is Type 2 Diabetes (T2D).

And if not treated T2D can lead to a number of health problems:

And I haven’t made this list up.

I got it from the National Health Service (NHS) website the national health care provider here in the UK.

And the research is predicting T2D will rise dramatically in the next few decades.

It’s 39 pages, but it’s well worth a read.

They predict: “Type 2 diabetes will rise dramatically in the next few decades.”
