There’s nothing new in the world, except…

This quote applies to all aspects of ZEN+

Though I think it’s especially true when it comes to exercise.

Take Bodyweight training or callisthenics for example.

It’s currently going through a very large boom in popularity, but there sure ain’t nothing new about it.

I would imagine push ups are as old as time itself =)

But perhaps the thing I love most about callisthenics is you don’t need a gym or any fancy training equipment to do it.

Sure, pull ups can be a challenge if you’re away from home.

But there are still ways to get it done.

If you know how.

I also think there’s something valuable about knowing you’re able to move your own body through a range of different motions. I find it gives me a feeling of confidence that’s hard to explain in words.

In fact I can’t say enough good things about callisthenics.

But back to the quote.

Because I also believe that if you want to know how to live a long, healthy and happy life… It makes sense to go back in history and study those who were successful in living and ageing well.

That’s what I did for the ZEN+ book.

And I found a number of studies that’d done just that:

And yesterday I discovered another type of study that can prove helpful for knowing what works and what doesn’t when it comes to living a life full of vim and vigour.

Longitudinal Studies – An observational study where data is gathered for the same subjects repeatedly over a period of time.

These studies observe all kinds of life events from child development to heart disease and everything in between.

The Up Series in the UK is a good example – It’s been following the lives of UK children from different socio-economic backgrounds and interviewing them every 7 years to see what they’re up to.

At the time of writing it’s been running 49 years.

Some Longitudinal studies look specifically at health and ageing.

And I’m currently reading the Baltimore Longitudinal study on ageing.

It’s fascinating stuff.

And it’s also very reassuring.

How come?

Because I keep seeing the same messages over and over again.

When it comes to living and ageing well focus on:

It really is as simple as that.

And history and research proves it over and over again.

I was reading the main results from The Grant Study yesterday (a 75-year longitudinal study of 268 physically and mentally healthy Harvard college sophomores).

And I quote:

Now quitting smoking is something your doctor will be delighted to help you with.

And if you think you might have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol my suggestion would be to get your arse to a local branch of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Because the truth no-one wants to hear is this:

If you smoke and drink in excess, the harm you’re doing to your body is far greater than the benefits you get from ZEN+ lifestyle habits.

And no amount of wishful thinking can help you to escape this fact.
