The Countdown to Spring

It’s the Winter Solstice today here in the UK.

The shortest day and the longest night of the year.

Tomorrow the days will start getting longer again and so begins the march to Spring.

It’s impressive that our ancient ancestors figured all this astronomy out. But I guess without the local supermarket to get food from and central heating and double glazing for shelter – they had to.

It could mean the difference between life and death.

Without watches and smartphones our ancestors relied on events like this to help them know when to plant and grow crops and migrate and so on.

But you know what?

Apart from the constant threat of starvation, and being surrounded by an excessive amount of opportunities to sustain life threatening injuries, I can’t help feeling our ancient ancestors were physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually better off than us.

Consider:

Up until the Agricultural Revolution about 10,000 years ago. I believe our ancestors might have lived harder lives, but I bet they were happier and more content.

Hey, don’t get me twisted.
