ZEN+ : Simple, Direct, Effective : ZEN+ Benefits

None of us had ever seen anything like this…

By Marcus Santer

When I was 15 I had an after school job re-stocking shelves in a local supermarket.

It was a small local chain of stores and doesn’t exist any more.

After my paper-round, this was my first proper job and I learned a stack from it. But I have to say not much of it was good.

I learned how to slack off, skive and throw sickies.

And I saw lots of underhand ways other staff members were making extra dough.

Like taking your trolly full of shopping up in the lift for you – without you having paid for it. Of course you paid the guy in the car park when you picked it up.

You’ve got to realise this was nearly 30 years ago.

There was no electronic Point Of Sale system linked to the stock so managers knew exactly how much stock they had and how much money should be in the till at all times.

No barcodes, no self-service machines, no electronic gadgetry whatsoever.

We had these little sticky label guns we used to price the merchandise – or fight each other with in the stockroom.

Ah, the stockroom.

Goodness, the tales I could tell about that place.

Here’s one that won’t cause anyone to go to jail…

When new stock was delivered, we’d form a chain from the lift to the centre of the stockroom.

The guy at the front of the chain would take a box off the pallet and throw it to the guy behind him, he’d throw it to the guy behind him and so on.

When it got to the end of the chain – the last guy would run and put the stock where it belonged and then go to the front of the chain.

It wasn’t the most efficient set up.

But it was fun.

Didn’t matter if it was a small box or a large box.

Didn’t matter if it was glass, plastic or tins.

It all got thrown.

It was like a badge of honour to your strength.

Hey, we were all young, dumb and full of testosterone =)

And yes… Things got dropped.

A lot of glass got broken and contents got spilled on the stone floor. The thickest of which was scooped up between two sheets of cardboard and the rest was simply shoved under the floor to ceiling shelves in the stock room.

I swear there was mould under those shelves that had been there so long it had evolved into intelligent life.

But my favourite incident involved a huge box of Swan Vesta matches.

Because it was a light box and because we were stupid, this box got thrown hard down the chain.

Until the guy in front of me missed the throw and the box hit the floor.

None of us had ever seen anything like it.

If you don’t know, Swan Vesta’s are serious matches. There ain’t nothing safe about them. They’ll light on any rough surface.

Including each other.

So when that box stacked with lord knows how many packets of matches hit the floor.

BOOM!

It was like a fireball.

Sorry, it WAS a fireball.

Rolling down the stock room floor.

Luckily one of the older guys wasn’t as dumb as us and grabbed a fire extinguisher and put the flames out before they took hold and burnt the store down.

And nobody ever got into trouble for these kind of shenanigans that went on all the time.

I tell ya, a bigger collection of misfits, scallywags, rogues and reprobates you could never hope to meet.

Funny thing is, it turned out the boss was the biggest rascal of the lot of us.

But that’s a story for another day.

So, what’s this story got to do with ZEN+? Well, it points out the importance of your environment, how you need to be careful where you spend your time and who you spend it with.

As autonomous and free thinking as you might think you are, behavioural science has shown decisions about things like your health are actually made by the group you belong to, the peers you associate with.

And it’s not just your health choices determined by the people you have around you.

Look closely at the people nearest to you:

If not, it might be time for you to work at a different supermarket… If you know what I’m saying.

Hey, before I wrap up, I’m delighted to tell you the ZEN+ book content is finished, complete, done.

Just need a front cover for it =)

And when that’s done, if you pre-ordered a copy I’ll be emailing you the link to download the PDF version for free.

So keep an eye out for that in a few days.

If you haven’t pre-ordered your ZEN+ book yet…
