My 3 Top Tips (for now)

By Marcus Santer

Louis and I had a Post Office walk yesterday morning.

I’d a couple of goodies to send to new clients.

Post Office walks take about 10 minutes longer than normal walks and they’re a great opportunity to let my mind wonder. Whilst Louis sniffs patches of grass I like to ponder.

Yesterday I was day dreaming about what 3 Top Tips I’d share with someone if they were out walking with me and Louis and wanted something useful.

What would they be?

Good question.

So I pondered.

And I contemplated.

And I eventually came up with:

1. Stop judging others
Realise everyone is doing the best they can with the information, experience or tools they have available to them at this moment in time. Including you. I learned this decades ago in my days as a counsellor.

It stops me judging others when I think what they’re doing isn’t what I would do. I mean nobody sets out when they’re young to become overweight, lacking in mobility, tired all the time and prone to sickness and disease.

It’s simply what can happen if you don’t have the right kind of support and information.

2. Recognise your victories
Through teaching others I’ve realised the importance of seeing your wins and acknowledging them. Because doing this helps you to stay fired up and motivated for the journey ahead.

And wins don’t have to be huge to count.

Mini-victories can be just as valuable.

Lets say you:

Well, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.

You don’t have to climb Mount Everest, discover a cure for cancer or win the Noble Prize to feel good about yourself.

But if you think you have to (like I used to) then nothing you do will ever feel good enough and that’s a terrible way to live.

Trust me.

3. Knowing is easy, doing is hard
This revolutionised my life.

Seriously.

I used to collect information and qualifications like other people collect the latest electronic gadgets.

I was ravenous for information and facts. Put the cartoon version of the Tasmanian Devil in a book shop and imagine what it looks like… That was me.

And I was broke and miserable most of the time.

And I couldn’t work out why?

Until I looked at one of my friends. He was very different to me. Whilst I was gathering more and more information about a topic or subject. He was out using it, applying it and teaching it.

I jokingly used to refer to him as Action Man.

And then one day I asked him how he read and studied less than me, but seemed to know more than me. Fortunately he took me to task and pointed out the bleeding obvious that I’d failed to see.

Knowing is easy, getting information is simple, truth is we’re drowning in it today. And it gives you the illusion you’re doing something. But you’re not. It’s a sham.

And most people don’t even read the information they’ve already got.

Doing is hard, but it’s where your real learning and education takes place.

You might know everything there is to know about living a longer, healthier and happier life, but until you start doing what you know, you’re not going to benefit from it.
