Good? Maybe it is. Bad? Maybe it isn’t. We’ll see…

My favourite quote from this week:

“Nothing is ever as bad as it seems… Or as good.”
Disraeli

I’ll admit I was surprised to wake up on Wednesday to the news that Donald Trump had been elected as the 45th president of the United States of America.

It was the same kinda surprise I felt waking up on June 23rd…

To the news the UK had voted to leave the EU.

So the first thing that springs to mind is, I’m not very good at predicting the outcome of important events.

The other thing I noticed is Brexit resulted in a very divided UK.

And it seems Trump’s success has caused similar ill feeling in the USA.

I hear a lot of people claiming these events are proof that the world has officially gone crazy.

I hear other people claiming the opposite.

Who’s right?

We’ll see.

Which reminds me of a Zen story I like to remember regularly.

It goes like this:

Maybe it is, Maybe it isn’t… We’ll see

One day an old farmers horse ran away.

Upon hearing the news all his neighbours were heard to say: “Oh, that’s so bad.”

To which the farmer replied: “Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t… We’ll see”

The next day the farmers horse returned, bringing with it a fine wild horse.

Upon hearing the news all his neighbours were heard to say: “Oh, that’s so good.”

To which the farmer replied: “Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t… We’ll see”

The next day, the farmers son fell off the wild horse whilst trying to tame it and broke his leg.

Upon hearing the news all his neighbours were heard to say: “Oh, that’s so bad”

To which the farmer replied: “Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t… We’ll see”

A week later the military visited the village seeking to draft every able bodied man into the army.

Because the farmer’s son leg was broken, they left him behind.

Upon hearing the news all his neighbours were heard to say: “Oh, that’s so good.”

To which the farmer replied:

Well, I bet you can guess what the farmer had to say.

The moral of this story?

Nothing is ever as bad as it seems… Or as good.

And I believe this applies to Brexit, to the 45th President and to anything else going on in your life.

Is it good? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.

Is it bad? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t…

We’ll see.

Bye for now
