Elvis and Nessy found helping the Queen pen a Christmas #1

By Marcus Santer

Most interesting quote this week:

“I always tell my players to find the fire within themselves. A chance like this will never come around again. Seek that fire — don’t be ashamed of it.”
Claudio Ranieri – Leicester City Manager

… More commonly known as soccer to many of my readers…

… What’s that all about?

I don’t get it.

And I’ve tried.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to have something in their life that made them regularly feel such powerful emotions, or be a part of such a passionate tribe?

I would.

But I just don’t get football.

Years ago a friend recommended following a team, suggesting that if I was invested it might help.

But what team to follow?

He asked me where I grew up and as a result I started following Leeds United.

Didn’t help.

You’d have to have been living under a rock not to have heard about Leicester City Football Club recently.

Though if you’re out of the UK, you’re forgiven.

Even a none football fan like myself has had to sit up and take notice.

How come?

Because Leicester City won the Premier League for the first time.

Which was impressive because at the start of the season they’d narrowly missed being relegated to the first division.

But what I find really interesting is that the bookmakers ranked their odds of winning the Premiership at 5,000 to 1.

To put that into some kind of perspective consider the bookmakers rated these events as more likely to happen:

As you can see, the bookmakers thought Leicester City had less chance of winning the Premiership than Elvis and the Loch Ness monster being found helping the Queen to write a Christmas #1.

It’s a great under dog story, even Rocky would be proud of it.

In fact it’s probably the biggest unexpected outcome in Sporting History since Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson February 11th 1990.

So what’s this got to do with you, you might be asking?

Let me explain…

At the start of the season Leicester City Football Club were written off.

As one writer put it: “They’re a team of cast-offs and bargain buys managed by a guy who’s been sacked in five of his previous jobs”

And I see people write themselves off all the time:

“I’m too old to get stronger…”

“I haven’t got what it takes to get my waist:height ratio below 0.50”

“My life’s too stressful to make sleep a priority”

“I don’t have time to go out for a walk”

And so on.

What Leicester City did shows that you should never write the underdog off and you must never write yourself off either.
