Aged 40 to 54? Read this to reduce your risk of stroke

The most useful predictor of your chances of a stroke is blood pressure.

Simple as that.

Trouble is, because of the 13 reasons I mentioned in yesterday’s post – What changed to cause such a spike in stroke rate? – 40 to 54 year olds rarely have time to get to the doctors and have check ups. And if your presently in reasonable shape there may be no reason to have your blood pressure checked at all.

And that’s the kicker because…

Hypertension (elevated blood pressure) is considered to be the most common and controllable of stroke risks but there’s a reason why Hypertension is known as the “Silent Killer” because it often has no warning signs or symptoms.

Until it’s too late.

The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have it measured.

There are plenty of home blood pressure monitors available, but how do you make sure you get one that’s going to give you an accurate reading?

If you’re in the UK, I recommend you check this list out from the British Hypertension Society.

If you’re not in the UK, do an Internet search on: accurate home blood pressure monitors – then make sure you look for a list compiled by a charity or recognised organisation in your country. Personally, I’d take the manufacturers recommendations with a pinch of salt.

Now then…

The National Health Service (NHS) recommends healthy adults over 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least once every 5 years.

After what I’ve written in this mini-series I’d personally recommend you check it on a monthly basis and keep an eye on your results.

Look, if you’re in the 40 to 54 age bracket, you can’t take it for granted that just because you feel okay and because you take regular exercise that you are okay. Remember it’s called “The Silent Killer” for a reason. And I’m not trying to scare you, I’m trying to help you live a longer, healthier and happier life.

And avoid the avalanche of crap that a stroke will pile upon you and your family.

So get your blood pressure checked – promise?

Staying with the CDC’s website they suggest by living a healthy lifestyle, you can help keep your blood pressure in the healthy range and lover your risk of stroke and heart disease.

They suggest:

  1. Eating a healthy diet
  2. Maintaining a healthy weight
  3. Getting enough physical exercise
  4. Not smoking
  5. Limiting your alcohol use

Just as I was finishing this mini-series Clarabella told me about a report she’d heard on good ol’ BBC Radio 4.

Apparently a study has shown grip strength was a greater predictor of all-cause deaths including stroke than systolic blood pressure. This study followed 139,691 adults aged between 35 and 70 living in 17 countries for an average of 4 years – So it’s a pretty big study worthy of taking note.
