7 Lessons You Can Learn From Jack Bauer

By Marcus Santer

Let’s have some fun.

I’ve been watching a lot or re-runs of 24 on Netflix recently.

Hey, I have a lot of admin jobs to do at the moment and most of them don’t require my full attention.

That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Anyway, here are 7 lessons I’ve learned so far from Jack Bauer:

Lesson 1. Never give up, never give in.

You can shoot him, torture him, pretty much kill him, but Jack keeps going until the job is done. He’s relentless in the pursuit of his aims and objectives. You could learn a thing or two about tenacity from Jack. I did.

Lesson 2. Keep your wits about you.

When you’re Jack Bauer you’ve got to expect the unexpected. Jack taught me that just when you think you’ve got the lid on everything, that’s when you’re at your most vulnerable. So don’t put your feet up until it’s time to go home.

Lesson 3. You can’t do it alone.

Sure, Jacks on point. He’d never ask you to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. But he’s always got a support team behind him. Providing him with intelligence that helps him to figure out what the next move should be.

Lesson 4. Do the right thing.

Okay, Jack’s always in a hurry and when he needs information from a bad guy, he needs it now. His methods are questionable. But Jack is an honourable man and sticks to his values like glue. When faced with dessert, staying up late, or not doing your practice, you could benefit from Jacks example.

Lesson 5. Focus on this day.

The various presidents in the series are frequently faced with impossible decisions. Yet as Jack is fond of telling them: ‘Those are problems for another day.” It’s good advice. Keep your focus on today. Or if you’re having the longest day of your life like Jack, keep your focus in each hour.

Lesson 6. Apparences can be deceptive.

Things aren’t always what they seem in 24. There’s always a mole feeding intel to the bad guys and just because it looks like you’ve won the battle… Doesn’t mean the war’s over. Trust your gut like Jack. And if something doesn’t feel right, if someone’s making your spider senses jingle – tread carefully.

Lesson 7. Keep your eye on the prize.

When the going gets tough. When it’s darkest and all hope seems gone. Keep moving forward. Do what you got to do, to get what you got to get. Now I don’t think Jack ever personally helped the 30th President of the United States. But then if this quote by Calvin Coolidge is anything to go by, he wasn’t the kinda guy that needed Jacks help:

“Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent”
President Calvin Coolidge

And there you have it.

7 Lessons I’ve learned from watching Jack Bauer of 24 fame.

Next time you’re having a rough day, next time you’re going through it, next time you’re tempted to give up on something important to you…

Think of Jack =)

Bye for now

P.S. It seems to me that if everyone just let Jack do what he wanted to do and backed him up, the show would have to be called 12 because it would be over in half the time.

But seriously, some things in your life you just simply have to outlast.

And finally, because I know Jack would give me a hard time if I didn’t give you an opportunity to do something to improve your life…
