20 Priceless Lesson I learned in 2015

Well, that’s that then.

2015 is virtually a wrap.

So how was it for you?

I sat down earlier this morning and gave myself an hour to call to mind the lessons I learned in 2015.

I’m sure there are some I missed.

But never mind, because here – in no particular order – are the 20 priceless lessons I remember from 2015:

  1. Fantastic Sleep February taught me that if you were only able to master one area of your life – one which would most help you to stack the odds of a longer, healthier life in your favour – getting fantastic sleep would be my suggestion. It’s that powerful.
  2. When the road ahead seems filled with trials and tasks you’d rather avoid. Staying in the now is the way to get through it. Whatever happens in The Now you can handle. You always have and you always will.
  3. Whilst Norway deserves it’s reputation as an expensive country – apart from the trains – you should still visit it one day.
  4. If it’s not in your food cupboard… You can’t eat it. Exercise discipline when in the supermarket or ordering your food online and you won’t have to exercise it later.
  5. Without physical exercise you naturally start to lose muscle mass at about 30. If you continue to ignore exercise, by the age of 80 you will lose about 50 percent of your muscle mass.
  6. There is no secret to living and ageing well. Numerous studies have shown the importance of: Sleep, effective stress management, exercise, good food and social connection – when it comes to living and ageing well.
  7. Emotional eating – Before you put that in your mouth ask this question: ‘Am I hungry?’ If the answer is ‘No’ see if you can work out why you’re seeking to change your state. E.g. “I’m bored, lonely, upset, tired [fill in the blank]” With this information see if there’s a better way to proceed instead of eating.
  8. Keep the commitments you make – especially those you make to yourself. If you say you’re going to get up at a certain time, do a particular task, or anything really – make sure you do it. It’s vital you remain credible to yourself. This is how you develop will power.
  9. You’re not at the mercy of your genes. Epigenetic’s shows how the lifestyle choices you make are just as important to a long and healthy life as the genes you’ve inherited.
  10. By 2020 projections based on current trends show that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s) – Heart attacks, stroke, cancer, pulmonary disease, Type 2 diabetes – will account for 75 percent of all deaths. But what’s really shocking is that by adopting healthy lifestyle choices the vast majority of NCD’s are completely avoidable.
  11. If it was easy everyone would do it. Success doesn’t depend on how smart you are or what tools you’ve got. More often than not it comes down to consistent action. Or doing what most folk won’t do. Not can’t do… Won’t do.
  12. Humans are happiest when creating.
  13. A gratitude list is a powerful antidote to feeling sorry for yourself when the going gets tough.
  14. When it comes to the effective – drug free – management of stress, Qigong is still the most effective tool available. So it’s a shame it’s still so bloody unpopular.
  15. There’s a lot of hot air spoken – and written – about mindfulness. I can sum it up in two words: Paying Attention. The longer version of mindfulness is this: The non-judgemental focus of attention on an experience as it occurs.
  16. Imperfect practice every day beats perfect practice done every now and then.
  17. Contrary to popular belief there isn’t one single cause for the obesity epidemic the world is experiencing. There are many factors at play but adopting – proven – healthy lifestyle choices can make sure you don’t become a statistic.
  18. You’re a social animal and you need contact with your fellow humans. The amount you need varies – some people need a lot, others only a little, most are somewhere in between. But make no mistake about it, if you want to live a longer, healthier and happier life… Adequate social contact is a vital part of it.
  19. Reality minus your expectations equals happiness.
  20. You’re more microbe than human – In terms of cell numbers alone you’re more microbial than human. And your microbes want just 3 things from you:
    1. 1) To be recognised
    2. 2) To be sustained
    3. To be protected

Okay, that’s what I got in the hour I gave myself.
