Why I live my life 30 minutes at a time

By Marcus Santer

The Sunday Quote:

“I live my life a quarter mile at a time.”
Dominic Torreto (Character) Fast and Furious

When I sat down to write today’s Z+D 5 minutes ago I had no clear idea of what I was going to write.

Sure, I had a few ideas buzzing around my noggin.

But it wasn’t until I pressed the Start/Stop button on my timer that the words above came into my head. And I smiled and thought: “Yup, that’ll do nicely.”

The key of course is to link the quote to something of importance and value to you.

But that’s easy.

Let me explain…

When I sit down to write/work I always start my timer.

It’s set for 30 minutes, give or take a few seconds because I use it for my callisthenics practice too.

But it’s fair to say:

“I live my working life 30 minutes at a time.”

Why 30 minutes?

Two reasons:

  1. Because that’s about as long as I can focus on a single task to the exclusion of all others.
  2. Because of the research I’ve done on the health risks of sitting for too long.

It’s reason 2 I’d like to look at now.

I read recently how most people spend only a few hours out of each 24 hours moving.

Scary thought huh?

Especially when you realise the human body has evolved over a seriously long chunk of time to move and to benefit from movement.

But consider my own example:

Add it up and you can see how I could easily spend around 19+ hours a day hardly moving.

And the research on the dangers of sitting for prolonged periods is very compelling.

It goes back to the 1950’s when a study showed how bus conductors – who spend most of their working day stood up – had half the risk of heart attack as bus drivers – who spend most of their working day sat down.

And more research to back it up keeps on a coming.

In fact I’d say there’s a strong case to be made that how much you move during the day is a greater indication of your future health than how many times you work out each week.

So if you’re like me, if your job or your life situation is such that you encounter prolonged periods of uninterrupted sitting…

What do you do?

Well, you buy yourself a treadmill desk or a desk you can move up and down.

And failing that, you set a timer for around 30 minutes and when it stops – you get up and move.

How you move is up to you.

But I’m going to be sharing what I do and everything I know on this subject in a report I’m calling:

The Sitting Solution

And I’m going to put it in the Bronze section of the ZEN+ Home Study Course (Z+HSC).

If you don’t want to wait for that, you’ll find one simple solution on page 46 of my book:

ZEN+ The Art and Science of Living Healthier for Longer

Available right —> Here <--- Bye for now Marcus P.S. Great timing.

My timer has just stopped so I’m going to get up now and take Louis for his walk.

But before I do, I wanted to give you a quick Z+HSC update.

Yesterday I put the finishing touches on the Qigong part of the Zest section. I’m using the PERFECT Qigong System (PQS) which sells for $97.

No point re-inventing the wheel when the PQS is already the crystallization of all the best material I’ve found from teaching Qigong for over a decade.

Anyway, it weighs in with the following stats:

And you’ll find it in the Bronze members area.

Coming soon…
