What to do when your emotions take you outta control

By Marcus Santer

I still get pretty scared before I go out and teach a group of people.

You wouldn’t believe it to look at me though. Because I’m like the swan. I appear to be gliding smoothly and gracefully through the water, but underneath I’m paddling like crazy =)

It used to be a real problem in my early teaching days.

I was thankful for the big baggy trousers on my ‘Sifu suit’ because it hid my knee caps which were shaking like a couple of maracas.

But I quickly learned an important lesson through facing this fear.

Which is…

You can’t talk yourself out of a powerful emotional state like fear, worry, anxiety and so on.

Why not?

Well, to be able to talk yourself out of the emotional state you’re in, you’d have to be able to use your mind and if your mind was able to handle the situation you wouldn’t be in the situation.

It’s like trying to put a fire out with a bucket full of holes.

So what do you do when your emotions have hijacked your mind and you’re feeling outta control?

You use your body.

Here are two ways I find incredibly powerful to help tame my emotions and lead my mind back to a more resourceful state:

  1. Breathing – When you’re emotions are in the driving seat, your breathing usually becomes shallower and not as efficient. Take some slow, deep, deliberate breaths helps to settle things down.
  2. Move – If you’re feeling fear, worry, anxiety, stress etc. Then there’s a good chance your blood is saturated with a powerfully toxic soup of fight or flight chemicals. Moving can help you to use them in a constructive way.

Personally I still like to feel a little fear and stress before I teach.

How come?

Because it stops me getting complacent and acting like I know it all. So it’s not all bad. In fact, I think stress managed correctly is a very powerful tool.

It can help you to:

  1. Put in greater effort
  2. Dig deeper
  3. Move faster
  4. Feel driven
  5. Be more aware of what’s happening

And so on.

And you can manage it correctly through deep breathing and moving your body.

By the way, I’m going to be teaching a couple of Qigong workshops this October in Norway:

  1. An introduction to PERFECT Qigong – Discover a simple path that leads to mastery of your health, happiness and vitality in just 15 minutes a day.
  2. Cosmic Shower – The ultimate way to cleanse away blockages to your harmonious energy flow and reveal your inner splendour in all it’s glory.

I’ll put a web page together with full details nearer the time, but I wanted to put it on your radar.

So if you can get to Trondheim in Norway on the 24th and 25th of October 2015, I’d love to meet you.

Bye for now

P.S. Not such a brilliant day with the Z+ Home Study Course yesterday.

I’m sharing a new set of 16 Qigong exercises I’ve only ever taught face to face and with my ZEN+ Inner Circle.

And the amount of work involved pulling it all together, presenting it all neatly and putting it all in one place is staggering.

Still, it’ll be worth it.
