ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

This minus That = Happiness

By Marcus Santer

Gotta be quick today.

Up to my armpits in unfinished projects.

But I wanted to break radio silence and tell you about the cool t-shirt I saw the other day whilst out walking Louis.

A student heading to the train station was wearing it.

And it read:

“Reality minus Your expectations = Happiness”

How cool is that.

Think about it.

There’s the way the world is and then there’s the way the world should be.

And so on.

Fortunately non of the above bothers me (much).

But if the gap between the way the world is and the way you think it should be is wide you’re setting yourself up for a lot of frustration and disappointment.

Here’s another example.

Back in 2008 when I wrote my first book – I knew it was good – and I expected it to be the first Qigong book to top the international best selling non-fiction boo charts.

When it didn’t I was gutted.

And each time I:

I expected great things.

I allowed myself to believe that: “This is gonna be the big one…”

Yet the reality was the results were mediocre at best.

And yes…

I was unhappy.

These days I still fight to reign in my expectations, but experience has taught me that unreal expectations simply set you up for a fall and it hurts when you smack your expectations up against reality.

Over and over and over again.

So as you move forwards, from this point on keep in mind:

Reality minus Your expectations = Happiness

Okay, I’ve got a ZEN+ Journal to finish and a book on knife making to work on.

Bye for now

P.S. Don’t get me twisted!

I’m not saying don’t be optimistic.

Ugh, ugh.

I’m simply saying be aware of your expectations and don’t let them set you up for a fall.

In fact, whilst I think about it, you might want to read this article too:

A simple technique to make better and more informed decisions.
