ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

The Unexpected Gift…

By Marcus Santer

I got an unexpected gift yesterday.

I ripped a hole in the passenger side, front tire of the car.

But that wasn’t the gift.

I swapped the bust wheel for the space-saver and drove to the nearest industrial estate.

That wasn’t the gift either.

I eventually found a tire place that was open (hey it was a Sunday in Devon) and that’s when I received my unexpected gift.

Want to know what it was?

Okay then, I’ll tell you.

It was the gift of 2 hours of pure, undistracted, undisturbed work.

Let me explain…

The tire place was packed, standing room only and after I was booked in, I got ready for the wait.

Fortunately I’d had the presence of mind to being my notes from last weekends Dan John workshop with me. And thanks to my location I had absolutely NOTHING to do except work through them.

I even had time to write this post you’re reading now.

All because there was no:

No distractions whatsoever.

Nowhere for my attention to go other than on the work to be done.

You know what?

I can’t remember the last time I got so much quality work done in such a short space of time.

I’ve heard some writers say they like to book into a hotel near an airport when they need to find work zones with zero distractions. But in future, I think I’ll just camp out at my local tire replacement centre on a Sunday!

So, what’s any of this got to do with you?

Well, if you’ve got work to do but keep getting distracted from doing it, I suggest you find a place where all you can do is the work or wrestle with boredom.

Which probably isn’t going to be a coffee shop.

Know what I’m saying?

Thanks to that puncture I’ve made some serious headway on February’s issue of The ZEN+ Journal. I’ve come up with a simple and elegant way to best deliver the gold nuggets from Dan’s workshop.

And I don’t think I’ve ever been as transparent as I am in this issue.

But I believe it’s vital in order to give you a very important message about feeling out of your depth.

Bye for now
