The Dangers of Sleep Deprivation

When it comes to feeling zapped of energy. A lack of sleep doesn’t just leave you feeling tired it’s also linked to:

  1. Decrease in performance
  2. Affects one’s evaluation of risk and subsequent decision making
  3. Innovative and creative thinking deteriorates
  4. Affects your memory
  5. Affects your mood
  6. Endocrine abnormalities like elevated evening cortisol
  7. Increased inflammatory markers
  8. Heightened risk of cardiovascular disease
  9. Metabolic abnormalities linked to obesity, insulin resistance and ultimately type II diabetes
  10. CNS function and cognition are impacted
  11. Impacts emotional regulation and functioning- meaning you’re less likely to express yourself as eloquently as if you were fully rested.
  12. Fear/anxiety is associated with sleep disturbance and sleep disturbance is associated with elevations in fear/anxiety – this is known as a vicious circle.

Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on health and wellbeing and many long term health consequences have been linked to shift work including:

  4. Cardiovascular disease
  5. Stroke
  6. Heart attack
  7. Depression
  8. Cancer
