ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

Simple pleasures are the best

By Marcus Santer

I‘ve got this horrible feeling I really am solar powered.

You see, for months now I’ve been getting up when it’s cold and dark outside and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find it a struggle. Though I tend not to think about it, because there’s nothing I can do about the weather.

And we seem to have entered a wet patch now.

So it’s cold, it’s dark and it’s wet in a morning.

Deep joy.

Anyway, yesterday I was doing my hour of household chores:

You get the idea.

And I built up a good sweat doing it.

I finished by cleaning the toilet, using Clarabella’s rubber gloves. Trouble is her hands are tiny compared to mine and I have difficulty getting the gloves off without spending ages turning them the right way in again.

And I was pondering how best to get them off whilst walking to the outside bin to put my dead cloth in.

And that’s when I felt it.

The sun.

The heat and light from the sun was warm on the back of my neck and looking up I could see it had punched a hole through the ever present cloud and was washing over the land.

So I took my shirt off, squatted down on the patio and enjoyed the sun on my skin.

I can’t describe how good it felt.

And then it get even better.

Louis, sensing that something was going on outside and being an outdoor loving creature decided to get his big fat doggy butt of the sofa and join me on the patio.

And we began play fighting.

He can get a bit rough, but I find if you just lay on top of him and squash him he gives up… for a while. And after being bitten, scratched and steamrollered by Louis it got even better.

Sammy, sensing that something was going on outside and being an outdoor loving creature decided to slink his skinny butt outside and join us on the patio.

Sammy likes a good stroke.

And I was in the mood to give a good stroke.

So whilst I squashed Louis I stroked Sammy.

I felt so wholesome.

I’d done an hour of good honest hard work.

I was outside soaking up some seriously rare rays.

And I was playing with my pets.

And then it got even better as Clarabella came out with a cup of Japanese green tea and had a chat.

But all good things must come to an end.

And when it was time to move on to the next part of the day I couldn’t help but feel blessed.

As my man Bobby McFerrin sang:

“Simple pleasures are the best, hell yeah!”

I’m with you Bobby.

Today I encourage you to recognise and celebrate the simple pleasures in your life.

Because if you’re anything like me, it’s easy to get caught up in the struggles, defeats and challenges of the goals you’re working towards and completely forget about all the blessings you already have in your life.

Bye for now
