ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

Remember this if you’re wrestling with an important decision…

By Marcus Santer

I was wrestling with a real hummdinga of a decision on Monday.

One of those real ‘fork in the road’ deals.

I must have flip-flopped over it a million times.

One minute I was all: Yup, option A, that’s what I’m gonna do, yup. I’m certain.

The next I was all: Hmm, I dunno. Maybe option B makes more sense long term you know?

On and on it went until I felt like my head was gonna explode.

Do you know what I mean?

If you do, you’ll know how unsettling it is to be in this situation.

Fortunately I was sharing this with a good friend and he came out with a gem of advice.

24 Caret gold.

Would you like to know what it is?

You would?

Okay, here’s what he said to me:

“Marcus, it’s impossible to make the right decision. Whatever decision you make it’ll be wrong.” He paused and then continued with:

He continued.

“Let’s say you choose option A. At some point in the future it’s gonna suck and you’ll tell yourself you shoulda taken option B instead. But, if you choose option B, at some point in the future it’s gonna suck and you’ll tell yourself. You shoulda chosen option A. In this situation it’s impossible to make the right decision. Just accept it.”

And you know what?

He was right.

When torn between two (or more) decision, options or choices, simply remember you can’t make the right decision.

Because you’re human there will be a time when the option you chose sucks and you’ll tell yourself you made the wrong choice.

Accept it.

And then get on with it.

That’s what I did.

As Arthur Schopenhauer noted:

“When you look back on your life, it looks as though it were a plot, but when you are into it, it’s a mess: just one surprise after another. Then, later, you see it was perfect.”

And if you’re reading this here’s a decision you can make that’s guaranteed not to suck…
