Why Superfoods Make Me Laugh

I read a lot.

From as many different sources as I can.

I call it: ‘Filling up the tank’

Because it’s hard to write a lot if you don’t read a lot.

Anyway…

My email box is always getting hit by the latest super or miracle food on the scene. I like these emails because they always put a smile on my face. You see, the thing I find funny about these Ultimate Supreme foods is the faulty thinking people have around them.

Things like…

Really?

I guess denile ain’t just a river in Egypt…

Marketers in the food industry want you to believe that eating certain foods can:

Okay, I made that last one up, but you get the idea.

Imagine someone staggered into Accident and Emergency with a gunshot wound in their arm or a splinter in their foot.

Which do you think would be treated first?

Exactly.

Medical rooms use triage to determine what or who needs taking care of first in terms of importance.

And when it comes to your health you need to do the same.

Here are the big guns when it comes to living a healthier, stronger and more active life:

  1. Don’t smoke
  2. Only drink a small amount of alcohol
  3. Make sure your weight is right
  4. Get enough quality sleep
  5. Manage stress
  6. Eat a healthy balanced diet
  7. Move more

Make sure you’ve got these covered first and then you can look at fine tuning your life with so called Hyper-Mega-Super foods.

Otherwise you’re just wasting your time and money.

Here’s a quote I like from Alison Hornby, dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association (BDA):

“No food including those labelled ‘superfoods’ can compensate for unhealthy eating. If people mistakenly believe they can ‘undo’ the damage caused by unhealthy foods by eating a superfood, they may continue making routine choices that are unhealthy and increase their risk of long-term illness.”
