It’s very nice to go trav’ling

Oh it’s good to be back.

As mega-crooner Frank Sinatra once sang:

“It’s very nice to go trav’ling
To Paris, London and Rome
It’s oh, so nice to go trav’ling
But it’s so much nicer
Yes it’s so much nicer to come home”

Great song.

​And so true.

Well, I’ve taken Louis out for his soggy morning walk through the Devon Countryside…

I’ve just finished my Cosmic Shower practice…

And I’ve just scanned through the 572 emails in my inbox.

Yeah, that’s not a misprint. That’s what I get for 8 days away from my Woffice!

Anyway…

I can’t help noticing that I’ve a lot of emails informing me that I’m going to die a most terrible death if I eat processed meat.

Hmm.

About that.

So a couple of thoughts to add to the stodgy mix already out there:

1. Eat Real – Yup, you’ve heard me say it before.

Look if you value your health and longevity it’s worth spending extra on food made, raised and processed the right way.

Simply aim for quality instead of quantity when it comes to eating.

2. Know how to read a study properly – I’m writing extensively on this subject in Novembers ZEN+ Journal. You see there’s just so much theory and bad science past of as fact, especially in the popular media.

And I got to say, as headlines go…

This one:

Processed meats rank alongside smoking as cancer causes

That I saw in Monday’s The Guardian really takes some beating.

Reading the article I did find this comment by Robert Pickard, member of the Meat Advisory Panel and emeritus professor of neurobiology of Cardiff University interesting:

“What we do know is that avoiding red meat in the diet is not a protective strategy against cancer. The top priorities for cancer prevention remain smoking cessation, maintenance of normal body weight and avoidance of high alcohol intakes.”

Hmm.

And this from Dr Elizabeth Lund:

“Red meat was linked to about 3 extra cases of bowel cancer per 100,000 adults in developed countries. A much bigger risk factor is obesity and lack of exercise.”

Despite the title, it’s a well balanced article on the subject and worth a read.

Now this red meat and processed meat subject has been going around for years and it’s built upon observational studies.

Which whilst not entirely useless are of limited value.

Here’s what Dr John Ioannidis Harvard MD and mathematician – who’s spent decades going back and reviewing old studies – has to say on the subject:

“80% of the conclusions drawn from non-randomised (observational) studies turn out to be wrong.”

Gosh.

You’ll be hearing a lot more from Dr Ioannidis in Novembers Journal.

Remember…

For a scientific study to be valid it must satisfy 3 criteria:

  1. Have no evidence to dispute
  2. Hold up over time
  3. Have repeatable results.

This latest meat scare by the WHO really doesn’t qualify as good science.

Bottom line?

Eat real food: made, raised and processed the right way.
