Are all products promoted by popular music stars unhealthy?

By Marcus Santer

unhealthy-products

I came across an interesting study yesterday titled:

Almost all food, beverage products
marketed by music stars are unhealthy [1].

Apparently popular music stars are used by food manufacturers to promote things like:

And they’re specifically targeting children and adolescents.

But the study also showed none of the stars in the study promoted:

You know, good stuff.

And concluded all the products promoted were unhealthy.

Oh, apart from one.

And that one was promoting pistachios.

Mmmm, pistachios =)

Anyway… The study – the first of its kind – reviewed adverts distributed over a 14-year period.

And lead author Marie Bragg, PhD is no stranger to this subject.

Three years ago she conducted a study of celebrity athlete endorsements [2].

In that study they found 79 percent of the 62 food products in athlete endorsed advertisements were energy-dense and nutrient poor and 93.4 percent of the advertised beverages had 100 percent of calories from sugar.

Here’s some more stats for ya:

So, as an adult do you think you’re immune?

Think again…

I’m currently reading what I consider to be the best titled book of the decade:

Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?

By Timothy Caulfield.

It’s subtitle is:

How the famous sell us elixirs of health, beauty and happiness.

And it makes for fascinating reading.

He takes a critical and scientific look at:

And also explores why non of us are immune from the impact of celebrity culture and how it can actually be hazardous to your physical and emotional health.

And I’ll be sharing Timothy’s findings in more detail in this months ZEN+ Journal.

Along with digging deep into levels 3 and 4 of The Healthy Ageing Pyramid:

I’m also going to be sharing the results of my latest self-experiment.

This one started on 1st February and ended 5th June when I achieved my target.

If you’ve ever wondered how to get rid of excess fat whilst holding onto as much lean muscle as possible…

This one’s for you.

Anyway…

All the details are available to ZEN+ Journal readers only.

If you haven’t joined us yet…

You can take care of that here.

Bye for now

Marcus
