Two uncomfortable truths you need to hear

As I lay in bed this morning I faced a choice.

Looking at my Casio G-Shock I could see the time was 06:30.

Do I get up?

Pros:

Or…

Do I stay in bed for an extra 30 minutes?

Pros:

Have you ever experienced this yourself?

If you’ve ever tried to achieve a goal that wasn’t easy then I know you have.

Because the inner civil war I’ve just explained is a classic example of what’s known as: Activation Energy.

Let me explain…

In chemistry, activation energy is a term introduced in 1889 by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius that means the minimum amount of energy that must be input into a chemical system with potential reactants to cause a chemical reaction – Wikipedia.

Now let’s look at how it applies to your life.

In life activation energy is the amount of energy it takes to:

Why is this important for you to know?

Because despite what anyone else might have told you, you’re never going to feel like putting in the effort required to create positive, sustained change.

And activation energy is the force that stops you.

Keep reading, because I’ll tell you how to make it easier to overcome in a couple of minutes.

But first…

Here’s the first uncomfortable truth I needed to hear and you might need to hear too…

When you were a child you had your parents and teachers telling you what to do and when to do it. You never had to worry about getting out of bed or getting school work done. Because if you didn’t do it you’d be in trouble. You’d get shouted at to get out of bed, you’d get punished for not doing homework.

You get the picture I’m sure.

But now you’re an adult, you have to be the parent, you have to be the teacher – telling you what to do, when to do it and kicking you up the arse if you don’t.

Fortunately, I’ve put in the practice and my inner parent is pretty strong.

So whilst I lay there at 06:30 wrestling with activation energy I found myself lowering my legs over the side of the bed and pivoting myself upright.

Whilst we’re at it, here’s uncomfortable truth number 2…

Anything worthwhile is rarely easy to achieve.

My experience is it’s going to require lots of hard work and fighting to overcome activation energy.

And most people simply haven’t got the stones or feminine grit to do what needs to be done. Instead they take the path of least resistance which usually leads to the ‘Garbage heap of despair’.

Okay, now let me share with you one way you can lower the amount of activation energy required to get life changing stuff done.

It’s planning ahead.

Planning ahead allows you to make it easier to do what you want to do.

Here’s some examples:

  1. Get your clothes ready the night before, so when you wake earlier than usual in the morning to do your Qigong you simply roll over and get dressed on your way to the bathroom.
  2. Take the batteries out of the remote control so you have to get up to change channel.
  3. Don’t put junk in your shopping basket, if it’s not in your cupboard or fridge you can’t eat it later.
  4. Arrange to meet a friend for a 30-minute walk – You’ll be amazed at how much more you’ll do for a friend than for yourself.
  5. Put the books you need to read in places you’re likely to read them.

You get the idea.
