The Vampire Duvet…

By Marcus Santer

Legend tells of a duvet…

A vampire duvet.

What’s that you ask?

Well, it’s a duvet that slowly sucks the life and energy out of you during the night.

Nobody really knows how it came into being.

But there’s one thing all the theories agree on…

The duvet isn’t evil.

It’s simply doing what it needs to do to survive.

So whilst it’s draining all the energy out of you it compensates by making you feel all warm and cosy and comfortable.

But the result is the same.

Difficulty getting out of bed on time.

And you end up running around late playing catch up for the rest of the day and never feeling like you’re in the driving seat.

I’m joking of course.

But this morning…

I tell ya, it really felt like The Vampire Duvet was a reality.

And I also feel lower than a snakes bow tie.

But that’s cool, because it gives me an opportunity to practice and develop a new skill.

One I learned from listening to American psychologist and proponent of Buddhist meditation Tara Brach.

It goes like this:

  1. Don’t believe your thoughts – They’re real but not the truth
  2. Pause
  3. Take time to figure out what’s really going on and how best to react to it.

So what I’m doing is not believing how I’m feeling,

I’m not letting those things run riot, I’m not feeding them with my attention. But at the same time I’m not pretending they’re not there. I’m simply not putting fuel on that fire.

Remember: Your feelings and your thoughts aren’t facts.

Which gives me the space to take a step back.

And after I’ve finished writing and editing today’s ZEN+ daily I’m going to take some time to really figure out what’s going on and what – if anything – I’m going to do about it.

I have a suspicion it will involve taking a break.

Because what with planning and preparing for the PERFECT Qigong Norway workshops next week and writing the knife book I’ve been pressing my foot on the accelerator a little harder than is healthy recently.

We’ll see.

Anyway enough about me.

This isn’t an excuse to have a pity party.

And believe it or not I actually thought twice about writing on this subject today, I mean I’ve got a ZEN Beast reputation to keep up.

But then I thought – screw that.

The truth is even with ZEN+ I have down days.

But the trick is to not let a down day turn into a down week.

And I have found the 3 step plan of:

  1. Don’t believe your thoughts and feelings
  2. Pause
  3. Take time to figure out what’s really going on and how best to proceed

Is a powerful tool for doing just that.

And I wanted to share it with you.

So if you’ve been fighting with The Vampire Duvet…

If you’re feeling lower than a snakes belly button…

Or you’re simply being slowly crushed under a tsunami of crappy thoughts…

I’m here to tell you there’s a tool you can use to turn what’s happening around and possibly even find a hidden pearl hiding amongst what’s going on.

Bye for now

Marcus
