The special lesson I learned selling ad space for a newspaper…

Many moons ago I had a job selling advertising space in a free newspaper.

I’d recently returned from my adventures in S.E. Asia and I needed a well paying job, quick.

How come?

Because Clarabella and I had just moved in together and I needed some cash.

Up until that point I’d been living in shared accommodation at the lower end of the spectrum in less than desirable areas of Nottingham.

Not the kind of place you want to build your love nest.

Now my job at the paper consisted mainly of working through the other 2 free newspapers and calling up the folks advertising in them and seeing if I could convince them to advertise with us instead or as well.

Now there’s something you should know about me…

I couldn’t sell a bucket of water to a dude with his hair on fire.

He’d listen to my awkward fumbles and embarrassing tones and then politely keep on walking – hair still on fire – looking for another way to put it out.

So you can imagine how well I did in the world of free newspaper advertising =)

I was rubbish at it.

I had a loose script and set number of calls I had to make each day.

I tell ya…

Some of the tricks I had to get up to in order to motivate myself to call another prospect only to be told to:

And so on…

For a delicate snowflake like me, 8 hours of this a day… Well you’ll be as amazed as me to find out I stuck the job for 3 months.

Enough time to get a good deposit on a reasonable flat.

Anyway…

One very special lesson I learned from that job was the benefit of reviews.

The sales team would have them weekly.

We’d look at things like:

And we’d plan for the following week ahead.

I liked these reviews, mainly because it was legitimate time off the phones.

But it also helped to bring some order to the chaos and I liked the way it was structured.

I liked it so much, I still do weekly and monthly reviews of my own work today.

Now then…

We’re inching ever closer to that time of the year where there’s a mass interest in reviewing the year that’s gone and setting goals for the year to come.

It’s called New Year resolutions.

And here’s news that won’t surprise you: It’s estimated only 8 percent of those who set New Years resolutions actually keep them.

To be honest I’m surprised it’s that high.

Whatever…

I want you to forget all about them.
