Can you grow new brain cells as an adult?

This is the question Sandrine Thuret discusses in her video TED video:

Adults can grow new nerve cells in the brain and this is called Neurogenesis.

When it comes to neurogenesis the hippocampus is one of the most interesting areas to look at.

The hippocampus is the part of your brain linked to:

Studies have shown that a reduction of neurogenesis in the hippocampus can also negatively affect certain memory functions – like spacial awareness. It has also been linked to depression. Which makes sense as the hippocampus is linked to mood and emotion.

Here’s a list of activities that have been shown to decrease neurone production in the hippocampus:

And here’s a list of activities that can increase neurogenesis in the hippocampus:

Because not only are the items on these lists a recipe for or against neurogenesis… They’re also the same broad brushstrokes used to create or destroy great health.

Let me spell out the core ingredients needed to stack the odds of a long and healthy life in your favour:

There really is no secret as to how to live healthier for longer.

So stop looking.

Let’s finish up this brief look at neurogenesis with the usual caveat:

There’s still a lot of research and study
needed to be done on this subject.

But based on my best current understanding of the research so far, it seems likely that by pursing activities that promote neurogenesis you can also promote and improve memory and emotion too.

And…

New research is underway to better understand the function of these new neurones that can grow in the hippocampus and to discover how to enhance their production and increase their survival.

I look forward to the outcome of that research.
