I‘m pretty good at sticking my head in the sand.

But by 16:45 last night I was starting to feel the gnawing sensation of a 1,000 stampeding elephants in my gut.

So I did what I’ve trained myself to do in such situations…

Focus intently on the here and now.

And for the next 30 minutes I put my body, mind and soul into concentrating on every aspect of washing the dishes.

And then it was time to make the call.

A few months back I bought an expensive mini-course to help me improve my business. Along with the lessons came a 30 minute consultation.

Now contrary to any impression you may have of me, I’m a serious introvert.

A term introduced by psychologist Carl Jung to describe a person preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings and who likes to minimize their contact with other people.

I bolded and italicised that last bit deliberately.

For me, the idea of sitting down and Skyping some business expert I’ve never spoken to before, to talk about my work, is about as appealing as running down the street naked.

But you know what?

I did it anyway.

Why?

Because of something I learned by making my muscles stronger.

Let me explain…

Your muscles grow stronger by being exposed to increased resistance over time.

And the same thing is true in all aspects of your life.

Avoiding those parts of your life you find tough or uncomfortable keeps you weak and stops you living a life worth loving.

As Matt Johnson, lead singer of The The sang in the song ‘The Sinking Feeling’:

“The path of least resistance leads to the garbage heap of despair”

I believe that the stuff you want for your life lives outside of your comfort zone. Otherwise you’d already have everything you want:

But if you haven’t, then there are times you’re going to have to force yourself to face the resistance of moving outside of your comfort zone.

Sorry, but there’s no way of sugar-coating this one for you.

My experience has shown me time and again that marching head-first into the resistance is where my growth is.

Because with the exception of taking Louis out for his morning walks, nothing even semi-worthwhile has ever come easy to me.

Nothing.

Which is why I’m asking for you help with taking the ZEN+ project out into the world.

And I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.

But for today I want to leave you with the following tips from this Z+D:

  1. When you’re in a tough situation focus on the here and now. It’s what peak performers do to help them access their training and skill in stressful competition conditions.
  2. You grow physically stronger by exposing your muscles to increased resistance over time. You grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually stronger the same way.
  3. If you haven’t got the things you want, then they’re outside of your comfort zone. Because otherwise you’d already have them.
  4. It takes serious guts to walk into the resistance – but wise people know that’s where their growth is.
  5. Nothing worthwhile comes easy.

And a bonus tip:

When the going gets really tough, I use this as a mantra:

“As tough as this situation seems, I’m tougher.”

P.S. The call went really well.

And yes, I was relieved when it was over.

And you know what else?

I felt totally pumped up and ready to leap tall buildings in a single leap.

How come?

Because when you deliberately step into the resistance – and do the stuff that scares you – you come out the other side feeling totally amazing and really good about yourself.
