7 Differences between confidence and arrogance

By Marcus Santer

The Sunday Quote:

“The reason why rivers and seas receive the homage of a 100 mountain streams is that they keep below them.”
Lao Tzu

A few days ago I was contemplating on the difference between confidence and arrogance.

Here are the conclusions I reached:

  1. Confident people are quick to recognise their mistakes. Arrogant people don’t believe they make mistakes – it’s always someone else’s fault.
  2. Confident people believe they’re as good as anyone. Arrogant people think they’re superior to everyone.
  3. Confident people are happy to let others talk about themselves. Arrogant people need the conversation to be all about them.
  4. Confident people own up when they’re wrong. Arrogant people think they’re always right.
  5. Confident people celebrate other people’s successes. Arrogant people always have to try and go one better.
  6. Confident people don’t gossip. Arrogant people like to talk bad about others.

But you know what?

I think the biggest differences I’ve noticed between confident and arrogant people is this:

  1. Confident people are willing to help others succeed, whereas arrogant people revel in other people’s failures.

What do you think?
