How to stop screwing yourself

I like Sundays.

It’s a day I dedicate to filling my tank and making knives.

Both of which are very important activities.

Filling the tank because it helps me to think of something to write for you every day and making knives because it’s a great source of happiness.

How come?

Because even if work is going down the pan I can (nearly) always find small wins making knives. And when it comes to happiness, not having all your eggs in one basket and having lots of small wins throughout the day are important requirements.

Yesterday whilst fine tuning the shape of this knife I was listening to TED videos.

This one with Mel Robbins titled: How to stop screwing yourself over – had some interesting insights in it. Two of which I’ll share:

1) You’re unique

The odds of you being born, at the time you were born, to the parents you have, with the DNA combo you have is estimated to be 1:400,000,000,000 or one in four hundred trillion as I prefer to say it.

There really is nobody else out there like you.

2) You’re never going to feel like it

Here’s a simple way to come face to face with the force which stops you getting what you want – Set your alarm for 30 minutes earlier than normal and when it goes off, pull back the cover, stand up and get on with your day.

Do it and you’ll discover the force you need to overcome to get what you want.

I did the setting my alarm 30 minutes earlier this morning and guess what?

30 minutes later I was still in bed.

This experiment highlights a very important principle about getting stuff done…

You’re never going to feel like it.

When you were a kid, you had your parents forcing you to do the things you didn’t want to do but knew you had to do. Things like:

And so on.

A big difficulty I face as an adult is I now have the job of forcing myself to do the things I don’t want to do but know I have to do. And because I’m in charge, it’s easy sometimes to not do them.

Now I’ve deliberately kept the focus of this on me, but you might be able to relate to what I’m saying.
