ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

How I fixed my shoulder by accident

By Marcus Santer

I don’t know when my right shoulder stopped working properly.

I just know as I started out on my strength building experiments – aged 40 – it was a real problem.

I couldn’t move it through it’s full range without a lot of pain and discomfort.

And being a bit pig-headed I didn’t let it stop me.

Until I wanted to take my Progressive Callisthenics Certificate (PCC). You see I found my shoulder kept letting me down.

So I went to see a very good physiotherapist here in the UK and practiced the exercises I was given faithfully, to the letter.

And it got a little better.

But not really better enough.

So whilst I was over in the USA teaching PERFECT Qigong in 2013 I visited the Egoscue Clinic in Arlington. The Egoscue Method is a postural therapy which aims to restore your body’s natural alignment and in the process alleviate pain and promote the full range of motion in the body.

A friend of mine had used it successfully to overcome his chronic back pain.

After a thorough assessment I got my Egoscue menu.

And when I returned to the UK I followed it faithfully, to the letter.

And my shoulder got a little better.

Better enough for me to eventually pass The Century and get my PCC (video below):

But it was still a weak link you know?

I’d kinda resigned myself to having to put up with it for the rest of my life.

And then I bought a £1.49 kindle book off Amazon called: Fundamental Exercises: Georges Heberts Practical Guide to Physical Education (The Natural Method Book 2).

I’d been a fan of Georges for years, but his work was written in French, so inaccessible to me. So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled across a set of English translations.

I found a simple exercise called: Upright Stance with Hands at Neck.

And I really enjoyed it. It felt good and gave a really nice stretch. So I practiced it two or three times a day when I remembered. I certainly never thought about using it to fix my shoulder.

Two weeks later I just noticed my shoulder is back to about 95 percent of it full range of motion and the pain I used to get in certain positions is virtually zero.

I’m delighted.

I was telling Clarabella about this last night and she said: “It worked for you”

And that’s when the penny dropped.

One size rarely fits all.

I bet the exercises the physio gave me work for lots of people. I bet the Egoscue Method works for lots of people. But they didn’t work for me.

Does that mean they’re no good?

It just means sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find what you’re looking for.

Because the truth is not everyone responds in the same way.

That’s why in the ZEN+ Home Study Course you’ve got:

And that’s just in the Bronze Members area.
