“What truth?” – There is no clutch…

After 28 years of driving stick, I’ve gone automatic.

How come?

Because Clarabella simply cannot get to grip with gears.

So if she’s ever going to get her driving license it made sense to ditch the gears and go automatic instead.

And it’s kinda blowing my mind.

Why?

Well, do you remember the 4 levels to mastery?

You know:

  1. Unconscious incompetence – You don’t even know you don’t know
  2. Conscious incompetence – You start doing and you realise you don’t know
  3. Conscious competence – After enough exposure you can do what you need to, but you’ve got to think real hard whilst you do it
  4. Unconscious competence – Now you can do what you need to and you don’t even have to think about it

Well, I’ve gone down from Level 4 to Level 3 with my driving because of changing from stick to auto.

And I don’t mind telling you…

It’s caused a couple of ‘brown trouser’ events as I’ve gone to change gear at a junction, found there’s no clutch, my brain has gone **Duh?** and all whilst the car is moving ever closer to the junction.

So what I do now is say out-loud:

“There is no clutch”

Whenever I approach traffic lights…

… A junction or anything really.

And it’s funny because it always reminds me of that scene from The Matrix.

You know the one.

Where Neo goes to see The Oracle and whilst in the waiting room, bald headed Spoon Boy is bending spoons, looks at Neo and says:

Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead… Only realise the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you’ll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.

Boy I love that movie.

Now then, Desert of the Real or not, computer simulation or not, your body is the vehicle you use to explore and navigate your version of The Matrix.

So if you want a smooth ride, you better take good care of it.
