How I nearly killed myself yesterday…

By Marcus Santer

G otta laugh.

I’m a huge believer in the power of NEAT

Or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis as it’s more popularly known =)

To quote from PubMed:

“Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise.”

So things like:

And so on.

All help you to expend more energy and increase your metabolic rate – the speed at which you burn energy – which can help you to maintain or lose weight.

It’s fascinating stuff.

Basically you want to move more more often.

Especially if you’re like me and spend a lot of your working day sat down.

Which means I’m a big believer in getting out of my chair every 30 minutes and moving around in order to break up long periods of sitting.

And sometimes I like to experiment and move in new ways – hey don’t laugh =)

Let me explain by telling you what happened yesterday…

As I got up to pay one of my many visits to the smallest room in the house – one reason why I’ll keep drinking 8 glasses of water a day even though studies show you don’t need to – Louis came with me.

And I watched him walking up the stairs and thought: Hmmm.

When he got to the top, I called him and he came back down again and I thought: Hmmm.

Then I went up the stairs Dog Style – on all fours.

Easy and surprisingly fun.

So without giving it any thought, when I got to the top, I turned around on the landing and went back down again…

Still on all fours.

Big mistake.

And that’s how I nearly killed myself.

Because I wasn’t ready for how much more physically demanding this movement was and nearly went rolly-pollying down the stairs.

Fortunately the shoulder strength I’ve built up over nearly 5 years of regular weekly strength training saved me and I simply ended up slamming my face into a few steps.

Nothing broken except my coolness =)

I tried it again, but this time stretched myself out, and kept my arse and my centre of gravity low.

Instead of a dog I looked like a Gecko.

So now it’s up the stairs dog style and down the stairs gecko style.

Much safer and more fun.

So, whatever you’re doing today take some time out to move in a different way.

Maybe move sideways or backwards or on all fours.

Experiment – but be safe.

Don’t try your new moves out on the stairs until your sure you won’t hurt yourself.
