ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

A tried and tested, 4-step plan for solving your problems…

By Marcus Santer

The Saturday Quote:

“Difficulties give way to diligence.”
German Proverb

There is a story of a man who was overwhelmed with problems in his life.

So he want to see the Oracle of Delphi – who was believed to speak for the god Apollo and answered questions on all subjects of power and wisdom.

He asked the Oracle to tell him how to get rid of the problems in his life and be free from them forever more.

The Oracle told the man she wanted a handful of olives in payment for her answer.

She told the man to go to every house in the area and to collect a single olive from each person whose life was problem free.

Many hours later, the man returned.

And the Oracle asked for her olives.

But the man replied he couldn’t find a single person whose life was free from problems.

The Oracle simply nodded and said:

“Problems are a sign of life and the first thing you must do to solve them is to acknowledge them. Then you’d be wise to follow this 4 step plan:

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Make a plan based on your understanding
  3. Execute your plan
  4. Evaluate”

The man thanked the Oracle for her wisdom and left.

The End.

I get a lot of email from people asking me how they can get rid of their problems…

Many times I can point them in the right direction to resolve a problem, especially if it’s linked to living and ageing well.

But it often goes deeper than that.

Many people seem to think like the man in my made up story (based on the story of the Buddha and the mustard seed) – that they can lead problem free lives.

I’ve met a lot of folk in my life and they all had problems of one shape or another.

I personally believe the only way to free from problems is to be dead.

So if you’re alive you’re going to have problems.

And if you want to solve a problem, here’s a 4 step plan I attribute to the mathematician George Pólya:

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Make a plan based on your understanding of the problem
  3. Execute your plan – This is where most people fall down
  4. Evaluate your plan

I have often found following this 4-step plan to be very rewarding.

Because as the saying goes:

“Life is 10 percent what happens to you
and 90 percent how you react to it.”

Bye for now

P.S. If your problems involve:

Then I’m confident you’ll find the solutions in the ZEN+ book.
