ZEN+ : Helping you Stay Young and Age Well

10 things I thought everyone knew about living and ageing well

By Marcus Santer

David Pogue is a ‘Tech Columnist’

I recently watched a TED talk where he shared 10 tech tips he thought everyone knew…

But as it turns out…

They don’t.

Things like hitting the space bar whilst on an Internet page will always move you down a page.

Neat tip that.

Anyway I thought it was a nifty idea for a ZEN+ Daily.

So whilst walking Louis this morning I quickly came up with my own 10 things I thought everyone knew about living and ageing well…

But it turns out they don’t.

And here they are – page numbers refer to my ZEN+ book:

  1. What you eat has a humongous impact on your health and vitality – Nutrition is one of the most controversial areas of well being. Nobody agrees on what what you should be eating for optimal health and there’s a reason for that – we’re all different – but there are three universal laws of healthy nutrition that nearly every professional agrees on. And you’ll find them on page 15.
  2. Only a habit can get rid of a habit – Discover the truth about habits on page 21
  3. Your body has evolved to move and one of the best regular exercises you can give it is walking – Find out more plus 10 measurable benefits of walking on page 23
  4. If it’s not in your kitchen you can’t eat it – Page 24
  5. Qigong is a powerful, drug free tool for stress management – Find out why on page 26
  6. If you want to be maintain your independence as you age you’ve got to build strength – Discover what else building strength can do for you on page 32
  7. Time is the most precious commodity you’ve got – Do The Life Countdown Experiment on page 54 and discover how little time you really have left to do all the things you want to. It’s like a bucket of cold, sobering water being thrown in your face.
  8. Sleep is the easiest and most powerful way to benefit your health – Yet on average we’re getting an hour less sleep every night than our ancestors did a century ago. So it turns out your mum was right about sleep (page 13). And the dangers of sleep loss are very real and very scary. Read page 80 if you don’t believe me.
  9. Fats are essential to your continued good health. They slow down the absorption of your food and help you to go longer without feeling hungry. Fats also carry fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and are essential for your body’s metabolism – Discover the skinny on fat on page 95
  10. You’re a social animal – Loneliess is harmful to your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. We all have different requirements for the amount of social contact we need. But you do need it. Full story on page 147.
  11. There is no secret to living a longer, healthier and happier life – The Alameda County study (1965) The Blue Zones studies, The Cardiff study (1979) – You might not be able to change your height, the colour of your eyes or the size of your bones, but the lifestyle choices you make can have a powerful influence on the genes responsible for your health and vitality. Read pages 152 and 163 for full details.

Yeah, I know there are 11 in my list.

Hey, what can I say?

I like to over deliver =)

But the truth is there are 120 tips I’ve researched and written about in my ZEN+ Book: The Art and Science of Living Healthier for Longer…

So choosing the Top 10 was an impossible mission for me.

And if you’d like to stack the odds of living and ageing well in your favour – because the only guarantees are ‘death and taxes’ – then make this your next stop.

Bye for now

P.S. You’ve probably heard me say it before…

But it’s worth repeating…
